A Garden-Wrapped Home

Isle of Wight, In Progress

Set within a generous garden filled with mature apple trees, japanese maple and magnolia, this detached house offered enormous potential — but the existing layout was fragmented, with awkward bathroom arrangements and little connection to the landscape that surrounds it.

The proposal reimagines the house as a flexible, light-filled home centred around a new rear extension. A generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living space spans the width of the garden façade, with triple aspect glazing drawing in views and daylight from every direction. The extension remains discreet from the street, creating a surprising sense of openness at the rear.

A key design move was relocating the entrance to the side of the existing house, accessed via a courtyard, transforming the former dining room into a welcoming and spacious hall. While the bedrooms remain in their original positions, the internal arrangement has been refined — adjusting door locations and circulation to create greater privacy and clearer separation between social and quieter areas. Two awkward bathrooms are consolidated into one well-planned, functional family bathroom.

Following a robust feasibility and concept phase — exploring multiple extension strategies and phased options — and a pre-application process, the design has been finalised and is now being prepared for full planning submission.
